Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning

Step back. See the bigger picture. Decide what comes next.

With the day-to-day moving this fast, time to think about the bigger picture is often the first thing to go. Even strong teams can lose a shared sense of where they’re going and what comes first.

I help executive and senior leadership teams step back, make clear choices, and commit to the way forward together.

The approach

Strategy is about making choices.

Good strategy means deciding where you’ll focus, what you’ll set aside, and how you’ll put your people, time, and money behind it.

A plan only works when leaders can explain it, teams can see their part in it, and people’s goals connect to it.

Outcomes

What you’ll come away with.

  • A clear strategic plan your leaders can approve and act on.
  • A focused set of priorities, with resources behind them and permission to set other things aside.
  • An organization aligned on where it’s going.
  • A plan built to be put into practice, with a roadmap and measures to track progress.
  • A direction your leaders can explain with confidence, inside and outside the organization.

Every engagement delivers a strategic plan, presented to your leadership team or board. It can also include a high-level implementation roadmap, a performance framework, a proposed governance structure, and launch communications.

From vision to everyday work

A strategy people can see themselves in.

Who you are.

Mission, vision, and values

Clarify your purpose, the future you’re working toward, and the values and guiding principles that shape how you work together.

Where you’re going.

Direction and priorities

Agree on a small number of strategic objectives, the measures that will show progress, and a high-level roadmap for getting there.

How it reaches everyone.

Built to cascade

Design the plan so leaders can explain it and teams can connect it to their own priorities, with guidance on linking it to annual planning and performance management.

Work on your mission, vision, values, and guiding principles can also stand on its own, as a starting point or a refresh.

Experience

Grounded in more than a decade of strategy work.

I’ve led and supported strategic planning for executive teams in government and for non-profits and their boards. That includes a fully co-created culture strategy involving 2,000 employees, complete with roadmaps, performance measures, executive sponsors, and an innovation lab to test new ideas.

I’ve also built people strategies and helped leaders connect strategy to the day-to-day. Drawing on human-centred design, I involve the people the strategy serves in shaping it. The result is candid conversations, clear decisions, and a direction your team believes in and can deliver on.

The process

A process built around the decisions you need to make.

Discover.

We agree on the scope, then gather input from staff, clients, partners, and other stakeholders through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, starting from what’s already working.

Define direction.

I facilitate sessions with your decision-makers to confirm your mission, vision, and values and to agree on what you want to achieve. Where it helps, we bring in employees more widely.

Draft and refine.

We land on a focused set of strategic objectives. I draft the plan, present it for feedback, and finalize it with you.

Prepare for launch.

I present the final plan to your leadership team or board. Where you need them, I add a high-level roadmap, a performance framework, a proposed governance structure, and launch communications such as speaking notes and Q&As.

A strategy is only as strong as the commitment behind it.
